The weird science of girls...

We girls are great, goes without saying, but did you know we're scientifically extraordinary too? Read on...

The weird science of girls...

Five amazing things about the inner workings of girls from a scientific and anthropological view point...

Periods syncing:

Have you ever had that moment where you and your best mate suddenly realise that you've got your periods at the same time? Women who live together, girls who share dormitories at boarding schools and even best friends often find that over time their periods sync. A nightmare for mass PMT crankiness but also really really freaky. So how can that even be possible? Even scientists don't know for sure, but think it's something to do particular pheromones that women release. Some women are even period 'pacesetters', meaning other women fall in with them rather than the other way round. Now that is something to add to your CV...

Gossip Girls:

So we all love a good gossip and know it's just part of what being a girl is all about. But did you know that your thirst for celebrity secrets and overwhelming desire to spill the beans as soon as someone confides in you isn't your fault it's actually science! Gossiping is what makes us girls. Women speak an average of 20,000 words a day while men only rack up 7,000. Being good communicators means we ask for help when we need it and keep our society cohesive and united. And it's good for you. When we gossip our progesterone levels go up, making us feel happier and more content! Right, better get on with it...

We fancy men like our Dads (yes, really!):

Women who had a good relationship with their father in their childhood's are subconsciously attracted to men who share the same characteristics and even smell and genes as their Dad. Although weird and a tiny bit gross there's nothing you can do about it. If you trust your father then your sense of self-preservation encourages you to find a man just like him who will care for you and look after you the way he did.

We fancy ourselves (well sort of):

We are naturally attracted to boys who resemble us in terms of facial structure and general appearance. It makes us trust them and feel comfortable. Famous celebrity couples who have similar face patterning are Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis and David and Victoria Beckham.

We feel threatened by sexy women:

The most popular insults women use against one another are ones that suggest sexual immorality. 'Slut, Slag, Whore, scat and bitch' are words used all the time without thinking about their true meaning. We fear sexually attractive women are we worry they might steal our men or be more attractive to men then we are. It may be a mistrust embedded in us from when we needed men to protect us and hunt and gather for us. But that was a long time ago now so maybe it's about time to let that go and move on?

Er, more on that in the next article, why girls might need to get over their science...
